Calcium Intake and BMI

A large study in Spain found that increasing your intake of calcium can help you lose weight. The researchers found that those with the highest intakes of calcium had significantly reduced odds of being in the highest quartile of BMI.

Higher calcium intake can enhance the metabolism of fat cells, increase fecal fat excretion, and may prevent fat storage. Likewise, lower calcium diets have been shown to impede fat loss.

Calcium is found in many foods, the best sources being leafy green vegetables and dairy foods. The Fractional Absorption percentage is highest with leafy green vegetables.
