Caloric restricition reduces aerobic capacity

Caloric restriction is associated with greater muscle loss than exercise induced weight loss. There was a greater loss of thigh muscle mass and strength in the caloric restriction group.

The caloric restriction group also had a drop in aerobic capacity (VO2max), which is significant because high aerobic capacities are associated with greater fat oxidation rates.

The take home message is, once again, that exercise is not just for weight loss….everyone should exercise.
