Ultraendurance exercise and fat utilization

Not suprisingly, ultraendurance athletes utilize large quantities of body fat to fuel their races.
In fact, 11% of their body fat was burned off in a 4 to 5 day races. Respiratory exchange ratio and plasma fatty acids showed increased fat utilization during exercise.

The researchers speculated that the changes were the result of the regulation of the gene encoding proteins that are involved in fatty acid oxidation.
